28 ASP's converts green waste to compost
The compost product at Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (WIWMD) significantly reduces landfill volumes and minimizes environmental impacts, particularly local odour emissions.
The facility utilizes Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting technology, incorporating Bioworks’ in-slab aeration and leachate collection system. This system features aeration blowers positioned away from the composting piles, ensuring unobstructed access for the windrow turner. Aeration is essential for continuously replenishing the oxygen supply, as it is rapidly consumed (usually within 30 minutes). This need for replenishment can be met through turning or forced aeration. The ASP method proves more efficient than conventional windrow composting (turners) as it maintains consistent oxygen levels within the pile, thus preventing anaerobic conditions, and increases throughput with a smaller footprint, less fuel consumption, and reduced manpower costs.
